Oliver Tonby is a senior business leader with almost 30 years of experience advising governments, multinational corporations, investors, and regional industry leaders across Asia and other global markets.
He is Senior Partner Emeritus at McKinsey & Company, and former Chairman of McKinsey in Asia. Over the course of his career, Oliver has worked across strategy and portfolio, operations, technology and digital transformation, sustainability and energy transition, governance, and organizational renewal.
As Senior Advisor at Antares Ventures, Oliver supports the firm on market navigation, regional networks, and commercial pathways, drawing on his experience across energy, materials, technology, sustainability, and institutional transformation.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Oliver spent almost three decades at McKinsey & Company, holding several senior leadership roles across Asia. He served as Chairman of McKinsey in Asia, Managing Partner for Southeast Asia, Managing Partner for Singapore, and Managing Partner for Indonesia.
During his tenure, he led major engagements with multinational corporations, investors, regional industry leaders, and governments. His work focused on helping organizations navigate large-scale transformation, including strategy, portfolio development, operational improvement, international expansion, mergers and acquisitions, leadership development, and technology-led change.
Oliver also led McKinsey’s Global Energy and Materials practice in Asia, advising clients across sectors undergoing major structural change. His work has spanned energy, basic materials, private equity, sustainability, digital transformation, and industrial productivity. He has been a key contributor to McKinsey’s Future of Asia series, offering perspectives on Asia’s changing role in the global economy and the forces reshaping trade, innovation, consumption, technology, and industrial systems.
In 2019, Oliver received the Public Service Medal (Friends of Singapore), conferred by President Halimah Yacob, for his contributions to Singapore’s economic development, including his role in helping develop Singapore as an innovation hub for McKinsey and supporting the Digital Capability Centre, a platform for piloting digital solutions in Southeast Asia’s advanced manufacturing ecosystem.
Beyond McKinsey, Oliver serves on the Board of Trustees of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He has also served on McKinsey’s board, INSEAD’s international advisory committee, the Ocean Hub advisory board, and Singapore’s Future Economy Council. Earlier in his career, Oliver held technical and engineering roles with Shell International and Norsk Hydro.
EDUCATION
Oliver holds an MBA with Distinction from INSEAD and an MSc in Biochemical Engineering from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
