Future of Agriculture and Food

Biochar

Biochar has been gaining attention as a low-cost, high-impact carbon sequestration tool, with the potential to remove 1–2 GtCO₂/year by 2050. Asia’s agricultural waste streams provide a promising feedstock, but commercialization challenges remain—quality inconsistencies, low carbon pricing, and limited policy incentives. As innovations in pyrolysis, gasification, and hydrothermal carbonization emerge, we are exploring whether biochar can truly scale as a viable climate and agricultural solution in the region.
